Description
The Atlas Statue at Rockefeller Center faces St. Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue. Made of bronze, the statue depicts the Ancient Greek Titan Atlas holding the heavens. Atlas is 15 feet tall while the entire statue in 45 feet tall. Installed in 1937, created by Lee Lawrie with help from Rene Paul Chambellan, it depicts Atlas carrying the celestial vault on his shoulders with the armillary sphere pointing towards the North Star's position relative to New York City.
