Description
The Civic Fame Statue sits atop the Manhattan Municipal Building intended to celebrate the consolidation of the five boroughs. It has many symbolic items incorporated with the figure and even had its arm fall off through the skylight to the 26th floor in 1936.
Constructed between 1907 and 1914 the Manhattan Municipal Building is a 40 story, 580 feet tall building built to accommodate the increased governmental space demands after the 1898 consolidation of the cities five boroughs. It is one of the largest governmental buildings in the world being used by over 200 employees from thirteen municipal agencies in the nearly one million square feet of office space.
