Into the Great Wide Open is the eighth studio album by the American rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released in 1991 by MCA Records. The album was the second Petty produced with Jeff Lynne of ELO, Electric Light Orchestra fame after the success of Full Moon Fever in 1989. The single “Learning to Fly” became the band’s joint longest running #1 along with “The Waiting” from 1981’s Hard Promises album. Both ran at the top for six weeks straight weeks. The other #1 single from the album, “Out in the Cold” also stayed at #1 but only for two weeks. The album was certified 2X Platinum by the RIAA in the US and positioned at #71 on the 1919 US Billboard 200 chart.
The music video for the title song “Into the Great Wide Open” stared Johnny Depp as “Eddie”, who went to Los Angeles to seek rock stardom. Others in the video include Gabrielle Anwar, Faye Dunaway, Matt LeBlanc, Terence Trent D’Arby and Chynna Phillips.
